Cookie Policy

This page explains what Cogway stores in your browser. The short version: no analytics cookies are set until you accept them, we set no advertising or profiling cookies at all, and you can change your mind at any time from Cookie settings at the bottom of any page.

Cookies we use

Cogway uses analytics cookies only, and only after you accept them in the consent banner. If you decline, or ignore the banner, no analytics cookies are set.

• Google Analytics 4, loaded through Google Tag Manager. It collects anonymous, aggregated usage data, such as which explainers are read and roughly where readers come from, so we know what to build next. IP addresses are anonymised. These cookies are set only with your consent.

We use no advertising cookies and run no profiling. We do not sell or share this data.

What we store without cookies

A few small preferences are kept in your browser's localStorage, not in cookies. They never leave your device and are not used to track you:

• cogway-theme: whether you chose the light or dark theme.
• cookieConsent: your answer to the cookie banner, so we do not ask again.

The newsletter

Our newsletter is handled by MailerLite. Its embedded form loads only after you accept cookies, for the same reason: it can set its own cookies. If you subscribe, see the Privacy Policy for how your email address is handled.

What loads before you choose

Being precise about this, because "loads only after consent" is easy to say and not quite true. When analytics is switched on, the Google Tag Manager container script is fetched on page load whatever you choose, and it starts in a denied state using Google Consent Mode. That means no analytics cookies are set and no analytics identifiers are stored until you accept. It also means Google's servers see the request for that script, including your IP address, before you have chosen. If you decline, the denied state stays and nothing further is collected.

Changing your mind

Use Cookie settings in the footer of any page. It brings the banner back so you can decline, which withdraws consent, tells Google Analytics to stop, and deletes the analytics cookies from your browser. Withdrawing is one click, the same as accepting was.
